A pandemic is an epidemic of a disease that has spread across a large region, usually crossing continents and international boundaries and affecting a large number of people. For many years the most common disease referenced as a pandemic was the H1N1 influenza pandemic, also known as the Avian or Bird Flu. In order to prepare and respond effectively to any pandemic, pay close attention to public advisories and guidance from public health agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Virgin Islands Department of Health (DOH) and messaging from the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Agency (VITEMA).
