Nature of Work

This is skilled manual labor in the performance of tasks. Work involves responsibility for performing a variety of trades tasks related to building and grounds maintenance, alteration, installation, and repair. Employees of this class may work without close supervision on painting, carpentry, plumbing, automotive and other work. Assignments are usually laid out by a designee of the Administrator of Courts or Assistant Administrator of Courts, usually the Building and Grounds Supervisor, and work is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion.

                                         Essential Functions:  (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed)

  • Performs painting, carpentry, dry wall repairs, lock repair, and mechanical maintenance work.
  • Assesses need for equipment repair, makes needed responses, and/or calls outside contractors to make necessary repairs.
  • On-call to respond to plant/equipment problems at all times.
  • Resets power to elevator and air conditioning after power loss.
  • Performs plumbing repair, including changing toilet seats and flush valves.
  • Installs and replaces building decorations and bulbs.
  • Replaces ceiling tiles; mows grass, checks fluids, washes and cleans vehicles, changes oil and spark plugs on equipment.
  • Performs custodial work; strips, mops, waxes and buffs floors; moves furniture and equipment.
  • Picks up and delivers and stores supplies.
  • Waters lawn, sweeps sidewalk and parking lot, pressure wash sidewalks, empties trash, cleans gutters.
  • Delivers and sets up bottled water.
  • May order routine items such as, bulbs, floor cleaning chemicals and hurricane supplies such as, plywood, nails, raincoats and flashlights; picks up, stacks, stores, and delivers supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools, and materials used in several building and grounds maintenance trades.
  •  Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the building and grounds maintenance trades.
  •  Ability to understand and carry out oral instructions.

  •  Ability to use hammers, saws, brooms, screwdrivers, mops, drills, power washer, dry wall tools, floor buffer, paint rollers and brushes, mowers, weed whackers, and chain saw.

  • Skill in several building maintenance trades.

  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.

Working Conditions

There is some exposure to caustic chemicals or fluids. Hazards may be encountered in working with power tools such as chain saws, drills, saws, mowing equipment, and sanders. May operate a two-way radio. May be required to drive an automobile.

Physical Demands

Work requires reaching, bending, walking, climbing, kneeling, pulling and pushing. Work may be performed outdoors or in a cramped work environment. Use of step and extension ladders is required. May have to transfer up to 100 pounds.

Licensure and Certification
